IRVINE ATHLETIC CLUB

formed  1972

Social night - 30/10/2004

The club had decided to hold a social night consisting of a quiz and live band which would hopefully get a few of the Athletic club members attending what promised to be an enjoyable night.

The night started with the quiz which had the unlucky number of 13 teams, consisting of anything between three and six members, competing.

Looking around the hall there was a definite and obvious division of the teams with the bands followers and loyal supporters (and young) in one corner and the rest in another. However these people were young and being students had not experienced the trials and tribulations of life, which is essential if you want to be a winning quiz contestant.

The quiz master was Colin Miller ably assisted by chief, and only marker Bill Simpson and they knew they would require all there quiz experience for this potentially explosive contest.

After three rounds of 10 questions The scoring was very close with yuppie students ‘Nodrog’s heroes’ and our very own ‘A team’ fronted by Dave Millar and Mike Flinn going head to head with 22 points.

After round four the ‘A team’ looked to have a winning score with 30 points and ‘Nodrog’s heroes’ being overtaken by ‘The Maybole Mob’ who had 27 points compared to their 26.

The final round was media and the students had a score of 10 out of 10 (obviously watching too much TV when they should be studying) to give them a finishing score of 36 points, one more than the ‘A team’ with 35.

The third place was a tie breaker, phew this quiz had everything, between Surgical Spirits and Aquarians and I think the Spirits won after answering some question about a 40 year marriage. The students would never have answered that one correctly.

After the prizes were awarded there was an excellent supper and then the crowd were entertained by the young band with a lot of potential, Colonel Stratho.

Why team ‘A’ only came second

"On Saturday 30th October five of Irvine's Top Athletes supported by two of their wives partook in the Irvine AC Quiz ; these five intrepid members were Dave Millar, Ian Berryman, Fergie and Murray Collier, and Mike Flinn and the two wives, Mrs Berryman and Mrs Flinn . Forsaking any illusions of creativity they entered under the imaginative title of Team "A", putting into the shade such predictable names as the "Numbskulls" "Maybole Mob" ( having marked their sheets a course in spelling would not go astray , shame on the Teachers in that Team) , and the "Thickos". Team "A" surged through the early rounds forging an impressive lead based on their vast general knowledge, geographic skill , sporting prowess ( although should not the question have been " In rugby when England beat Scotland what trophy do they retain ?") and music across the decades. However , they faltered in the last round , expecting media questions to be based on the sort of issues that feature in the broadsheets, however, when faced with "What is the name of the computer in Red Dwarf?" , it was perfectly understandable that the commanding lead was eroded and they were pipped at the post by one point. However , we are not bitter, but merely wish to point out that if we had trusted our initial reactions another two points would have been accumulated and doubts about "El Capo" , literally translated as "from the Top" and not the "Beginning" ; take note Mr. Quiz Master.Well done to the Winning Team on scrapping a victory, which was morally ours but we enjoyed the sweets "
